Not your ordinary Chipmunk!
The golden-mantled ground squirrel is a small chipmunk-like squirrel with grayish-brown fur on top with two white stripes bordered by black stripes on its sides. It has a lighter underside. Its head, face, front paws and chest are a coppery red.

What you might not know

The Osprey (Pandion haliaeetus) is a sea eagle, as is the Bald Eagle

In 2015, 30 active nests were monitored in Yellowstone. 50% of them successful, similar to the 28-year average (51%), meaning 28 young were produced. Productivity for active nests in 2015 (0.93 young per nesting female) was greater than the 28-year average (0.86).

Elk herds
Yellowstone provides summer range for an estimated 10,000–20,000 elk (Cervus elaphus) from 6–7 herds, most of which winter at lower elevations outside the park.
